Sunriver is a resort community in Central Oregon about three and a half hours from Portland, built for families. House rentals come with passes to SHARC, the recreation center with pools, a lazy river, water slides, and a hot tub. Sunriver Village has restaurants, shops, mini golf, bumper cars, and enough to fill several days without ever leaving the community. It is one of the most low-effort, high-reward family trips in the Pacific Northwest.
I did not expect to love Sunriver as much as I did. I went with my mom, my six-year-old, and our puppy Frankie, slightly under the weather from a summer cold, in the middle of wildfire season. And I still had a really wonderful time. That says something.
What Sunriver Actually Is
Sunriver is a planned resort community in Central Oregon, about 15 miles south of Bend. It is not a hotel. It is not a campground. It is essentially its own little village: houses, restaurants, shops, a recreation center, bike paths, and a whole lot of ponderosa pines. The vibe is very much “everyone here is on vacation and nobody is in a hurry,” which turns out to be exactly what you want.
Worth noting: every house in Sunriver appears to be required by law to be painted brown and have outdoorsy decor. This is not a complaint. It is extremely on brand and I respect it.
Where We Stayed
We rented a house through Meredith Lodging. Two living areas downstairs, a fireplace, a full kitchen, laundry, two bedrooms upstairs with their own TVs, a hot tub and grill on the patio, and an Xbox that my son treated as the greatest gift he had ever received. It was comfortable, woodsy, and had everything we needed for three nights.
The important thing about renting a house in Sunriver is that it comes with SHARC passes. Six passes per house, included. This is a big deal and I will explain why in a minute.
If you are going as a couple, the Sunriver Resort is worth knowing about separately. It is about half a mile from the village and walkable to everything, but the vibe is completely different from a rental house. It is upscale and polished, with a golf course, a pool, on-site restaurants, and that proper resort feel. I stayed there with my husband for an awards ceremony and it was really lovely. For a romantic getaway or a couple who wants full-service without cooking your own breakfast, it is an excellent option. For families and groups, the house rental is still the move because of the space, the kitchen, and the SHARC passes.
SHARC: The Whole Reason to Go
SHARC stands for Sunriver Homeowners Association Recreation Center, and it is genuinely excellent. We spent half a day there and it was one of the highlights of the trip.
There is an outdoor pool, a lazy river, water slides, a splash pad, an indoor pool, a whirlpool, a hot tub, and a restaurant on site. For a six-year-old, this is paradise. For a mom with a summer cold sitting in the sun while her kid goes down a water slide for the fourteenth time, it is also pretty great.
The passes are included with house rentals, which means you are getting in for free. If you were to pay out of pocket, SHARC adds up quickly for a family. It is one of the main reasons a house rental makes more financial sense than staying at the resort if you have kids.
The Village at Sunriver
We walked into the village every day. It is an easy walk or bike ride from most rentals, dog-friendly the whole way, and has enough going on that you could fill several days without running out of things to do.
For kids: there is a little train that loops around the village (driven by what appears to be a very patient teenager), bouncy houses, mini golf, bumper cars, an arcade (unfortunately closed when we tried to go), and more ice cream than any reasonable person needs. A word of warning about Goody’s ice cream: if you order a kid scoop, expect it to be approximately the size of your child’s head. Plan accordingly.
For eating: we had dinner at Village Bar and Grill our first night. I got a French dip that was genuinely really good, and I was surprised by how affordable everything was for a resort town. Campfire Pizza was our other dinner and the standout there was the meatball appetizer: rich tomato sauce, really well done, would absolutely order again.
We also had breakfast in the village one morning and shared a pain au chocolat. My son has been on a pain au chocolat kick since Paris. This was was heavy on the chocolat, which he certainly had zero complaints about.
A Few Honest Notes
I had a cold the entire trip, which the dry Central Oregon air was not kind to. There were wildfires nearby, so it was smoky on and off. The morning we left it rained, which in mid-July in Central Oregon is apparently possible. None of this ruined anything, but if you are sensitive to smoke or dry air, worth knowing.
The village arcade was closed when we tried to go, which was a disappointment for my very arcade-motivated child. Call ahead or check hours before building your day around it.
Frankie, our puppy, came with us and the village was extremely dog-friendly. Most restaurants have patios where dogs are welcome. There were plenty of other dogs around. She was very popular.
Would I Go Back?
Yes, and I would go in a heartbeat with a family of any configuration. Young kids, older kids, grandparents, groups of friends, couples who want a low-key long weekend. Sunriver works for all of it. The infrastructure is just so well set up for people to relax and not think too hard.
It is also a great home base if you want to do more while you are there. Bend is about 15 minutes away. Crater Lake is about an hour and a half. The Deschutes River runs through the area.
The High Desert Museum is about 10 minutes from Sunriver and genuinely one of the best stops in Central Oregon. We spent a couple of hours there and it was a highlight of the whole trip. There is a pretend mining village that my son wanted to walk through twice. My mom, who I would not have predicted to be the target audience for a mining village, loved every second of it. I got up close to a porcupine and their little noses are honestly everything. I have been multiple times because my husband grew up in the area and it holds up every single visit. If you are going to Sunriver with kids, the High Desert Museum is not optional.
Cheers to the staycation that still feels like a vacation, even when you are absolutely dying with a summer cold. Summer colds should be illegal. That is all. Planning a Pacific Northwest trip and want someone to handle the logistics? That’s exactly what my travel planning services are for.
