Punk Royale London: The Best Dinner I Have Ever Had (And Why I Have Almost No Photos)

I need to tell you about a dinner in London that I almost cannot describe. Not because the food was too fancy for words (it was), but that is not the problem. The problem is they confiscated my phone at the door and then spent the next several hours actively trying to make me too drunk and too dazzled to remember what I ordered. They mostly succeeded.

We went to Punk Royale. And it is the best dinner I have ever had in my life.

So What Actually Is Punk Royale?

Punk Royale is a multi-course tasting menu restaurant in London with a very specific philosophy: you show up, you surrender your phone, and they do whatever they want to you for the next few hours. In the best possible way.

It starts quiet but still gently chaotic. You head to the open kitchen to meet the chef, get a shot of vodka from a gas can and a caviar bump bigger than you could ever imagine. Then you sit down, there are candles, things feels pretty normal. But then, gradually things get progressively unhinged. By the end of the night there were fog machines, blasting music, swinging lights, the dishwasher was wearing a mask, and the servers were literally riding on each other’s backs. I am not making any of this up.

Every course got a little more chaotic than the last. A course served in a syringe. Something involving a rubber glove. A wonton wrapper situation with what I think was rutabaga that somehow worked completely. There was a course that tasted exactly like the world’s best beef stew but arrived looking like something from a museum. My husband and I kept looking at each other like, what is happening right now.

It also happens to be genuinely delicious. Not like “fun experience, so-so food” delicious. Actually delicious. Every single bite.

The No-Phone Policy

I knew about it going in, so I was prepared. And I want to be honest: I was a little sad about it. I am a food blogger. Documenting beautiful food is kind of the whole thing. My instinct in a restaurant this creative was to photograph everything.

But here’s what I didn’t expect. Not having my phone made the whole experience better. You have to actually immerse yourself. You are not half-present while also managing your camera angle. You are just sitting there, eating something strange and extraordinary, laughing with your husband, watching chaos unfold in real time. And I think that is exactly what they intend.

There is a mystery element to Punk Royale that I now understand completely. If everyone posted everything in real time, the surprise would be gone. The fact that you cannot document it makes it feel like a secret. And I am so glad I got to be in on it.

What to Know Before You Go

Tickets are around £220 per person and include all the food and the included drinks. We did add an extra drink or two so the total was a bit more than that, but for what you get, every course and every pour, it is genuinely fair. This is not a meal you will do on impulse, and it should not be. It is a splurge and it delivers.

We booked about a month in advance. They do not take walk ins. In fact, the door is hard to find and stays locked until it’s time for you to enter.

And if you are on the fence about spending that kind of money on one dinner? Here is what I would tell you: if you want an experience you will absolutely never forget, with food that is genuinely outstanding and a level of theatrical chaos you cannot find anywhere else, do it. Every single course, things got a little crazier. You go in not knowing what to expect and you leave feeling like you were part of something. I am so glad they lock up the phones because what happens in that dining room deserves to stay in that dining room.

Cheers to the dinners you still cannot fully explain. This was one of them.

Right before our phones were locked up.
After we got our phones back…the only documentation of the chaos.
